The US needed a breakthrough to close out a record-breaking 2021. Enter Cole Bassett. The 20-year-old Colorado Homegrown scored on his debut in the dying moments to secure the 1-0 for the Red White and Blue.
Bassett subbed on to make his senior team debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 78th minute and the US recorded a 17th win in a calendar year, the most in program history.
"Super stoked to get the win. Record-breaking year, 17 wins, it's the most-ever for the national team so we're happy to do it," Bassett said on U.S Soccer's social media immediately following the win in L.A. "To score on my debut, I'm super excited. Hopefully this is the start of a lot more."
Earlier in the night, Rapids midfielder Kellyn Acosta made history of his own as he appeared for the 21st time for the US in 2021, in doing so he became the first player to hit that mark since 1994.
