TUCSON, Ariz. – The Colorado Rapids will play their second preseason scrimmage on Saturday, March 20, against Sporting Kansas City. Rapids fans can follow the Live Blog on ColoradoRapids.com beginning at 4PM MT.
“We’re looking forward to the game. It’s another chance to test our ideas, our concept, our identity that we’ve been working on,” Rapids assistant coach Chris Little said. “We know we’ll get a good test. We’re excited about the opportunity. The guys have been working very hard with double days and some good sessions. Really working hard on building our identity in and out of possession. We saw lots of things we liked in the first game. Obviously, lots of room for improvement, it’s still early in preseason. The players are working really hard.”
The Rapids played against their first preseason opponents on Tuesday in two separate 45-minute scrimmages against Portland Timbers and USL Championship side Phoenix Rising FC. Winger Michael Barrios, acquired via trade in January, scored and assisted on Kellyn Acosta’s goal as the Rapids defeated Portland 2-0. Against Phoenix, Homegrown Players Oliver Larraz and Matt Hundley scored for another 2-0 win.
On Wednesday, Acosta was called up to the U.S. Men’s National Team for two upcoming friendly matches, first against Jamaica on March 25 in Austria, and then against Northern Ireland in Belfast on March 28.
Rapids Homegrown midfielder Cole Bassett returned this week from the U.S. U-23 MNT camp in Guadalajara, Mexico, and is participating fully in preseason training following a quarantine period.
