COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — The Colorado Rapids have loaned16-year-old forward Darren Yapi to their USL Championship affiliate, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, the club announced today. Under the terms of the loan, the Rapids retain the right to recall Yapi at any point during the 2021 regular season, in accordance with MLS roster compliance rules.
“This is a great opportunity for Darren,” said Pádraig Smith, Colorado Rapids Executive VP & General Manager. “Darren will continue to train with our First Team while having the chance to earn playing time in a competitive league with the Switchbacks. Given his young age, playing against professionals in a competitive environment is critical part of his development pathway and we look forward to seeing him continue to grow as a player.”
Yapi became the youngest player to sign with the Rapids on March 3 at 16 years, 104 days old and is the 10th Rapids Academy product to sign a Homegrown Player contract with Colorado since 2017. The Green Valley Ranch, Colo., native has been included on four matchday rosters for the Rapids this season.
