COMMERCE CITY, Colo. —The Colorado Rapids announced today the signing of midfielder Omir Fernandez to a three-year contract with a club option for an additional season.
“We’re elated to add a player of Omir’s quality and experience to our roster,” said Colorado Rapids Sporting Director, Fran Taylor. “Omir is an attacking player coming into his prime and possesses the physical attributes and mentality that we believe will make us a more dangerous group. We look forward to welcoming him to Colorado.”
Fernandez, 24, joins the Rapids via free agency following five seasons with the New York Red Bulls. During this time, he scored 19 goals and delivered 13 assists in 130 appearances across all competitions. The Bronx, New York, native achieved a career-high single-season total of six goals during the 2023 regular season, complimented by four assists.Â
“We are incredibly happy to bring Omir to the club. Not only is he an intelligent and skilled attacking player, but he also exemplifies humility and high character. Having worked with him before, I know he understands our style of play really well and I’m looking forward to working with him again,” said Rapids Head Coach, Chris Armas.
Since joining the Red Bulls in 2019, Fernandez has made four appearances for Red Bulls II of MLS Next Pro. Fernandez now reunites with Rapids Head Coach Chris Armas, who led the Red Bulls from 2018-20. Prior to joining the New York club, Fernandez played at Wake Forest, where he recorded 42 goals in 56 games from 2017-18. During this time, he also featured for the New York Red Bulls U-23 team, after spending two seasons with the Red Bulls Academy from 2011-16. At the youth international level, Fernandez has been called up to both the US U-18 and U-20 squads.
