COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — The Colorado Rapids have signed Scottish winger Sam Nicholson to a two-and-a-half-year contract with an option for an additional year, the club announced today. The free agent returns to Colorado where he spent three seasons between 2018 and 2020.

Nicholson, 27, rejoins the Rapids after spending the past two seasons with Bristol Rovers of the English Football League Two. During his time with the English side, Nicholson made 75 appearances across all competitions, including League One, League Two, the FA Cup, EFL Trophy and EFL Cup, recording 14 goals and eight assists in that span.Â
Prior to joining the English side, Nicholson spent three seasons with the Rapids from May 2018 to July 2020. The Edinburgh, Scotland, native logged 3,464 minutes, netted four goals and delivered six assists across 48 appearances with Colorado.Â
Nicholson’s professional career began in 2013 with Heart of Midlothian (Hearts) of the Scottish Premiership. He spent four seasons with the club, scoring 16 goals and delivering 24 assists in 127 appearances for the club. Nicholson then joined Minnesota United FC as a free agent midway through the 2017 MLS season, going on to register two goals and two assists with the Loons before being traded to the Rapids in 2018.Â
