Cinderella will take the form of a team other than the Colorado Rovers in the 100th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
The Rovers, making their Open Cup debut and representing first-time entry U.S. Specialty Sports Association - the lowest level in the 68 team national tournament - fell to the Georgia Revolution 5-3 on penalty kicks Tuesday night at Shea Stadium in Highlands Ranch after the teams played to a 1-1 tie through overtime.
The Revolution - from the National Premier Soccer League - took the lead in the 25th minute when forward Kwadwo Poku collected a lose ball in the box and volleyed a shot to the far side net to put the road team up 1-0.
Colorado equalized in the 74th on a goal by former Colorado Rapids Academy and Metro State University standout Marc Herschberger, who caught up to a flicked on header and beat the Georgia goalkeeper to the ball, getting just enough on it to get it past the 'keeper and into the net.
Rovers midfielder Ritchie Kotschau - a former Rapids player - nearly won the match in the dying second of the second overtime but his shot to the far post from a tight angle was cleared by a Revolution defender.
The match was decided on penalty kicks, with Georgia's goalkeeper getting his fingertips on the Rovers first attempt and saving it off the post. The Revolution made all five of their shots to win 5-3 on penalty kicks.
Georgia will now host the Real Colorado Foxes from the USL Premier Develpment League in the first round of the oldest soccer tournament in the country on May 14 in Conyers, Georgia.
The Rapids will enter the tournament in the third round on May 27 or 28 against a winner to be determined from the second round.
