With the players set to report for the start of the 2013 preseason on January 17 - the same day as the MLS SuperDraft - ColoradoRapids.com will be taking a look at the depth chart at each position, based on the formation the team utilized for the last portion of last year.
Right Side:
I don't get caught up in formations that expect a team to play a fixed 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1, 4-5-1, 4-3-3, or whatever combination of numbers adds up to 10 field players. Doing so is good for discussion, but not for allowing fluidity - which is what happens seconds after the whistle blows.
That's the case on the right side, where 'playmaker' Martin Rivero 'lined up' at over the last few games last year. Anyone that watched realized that Rivero wasn't your typical right-winger. He had freedom to roam, in many ways playing like Landon Donovan does with the U.S. National Team from the right. For that like to think of formations, think of Rivero playing in the middle with two holding midfielders, and having the left wing, withdrawn forward, and striker attacking.
In a different system, Brian Mullan and Atiba Harris can man the right side. They don't necessarily bring the creativity of a player like Rivero, but can move up and down the flank to send crosses as well as cut in to shoot. Having said that, Mullan is also an option at right back.
