Each month Sports Illustrated honors a high school athlete who displays exemplary athletic and leadership abilities. In March, Porter Milner of Broomfield High School received that honor.
Milner is a star senior midfielder who has racked up accolades in his time at Broomfield High including First Team All-State selections as well as All America honors. In addition to his on-the-field accomplishments, Milner has shown strong character through his volunteer work as a mentor to younger students and his involvement in student organizations and service projects.
Colorado Rapids midfielder Jermaine Jones had the opportunity to present the award to Porter at a ceremony during halftime of a girl's game and was impressed by Milner's influence.
"The whole school knows him," said Jones. "We walked out today and to see what kind of support he gets is amazing."
Milner described his introduction to Jones as awesome. "He's kind of a huge public figure, seeing him play for the national team and for the Rapids. And he's kind of larger than life, so it was cool to see him come by and give me the award and meet him face-to-face."
Milner has committed to play at Regis University after he graduates, but he has left behind a legacy at Broomfield High School that goes beyond the soccer pitch.
