The Colorado Rapids Soccer Club battled to a 0-0 draw against FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium, earning their second tie in the last three away matches.
Despite being outshot throughout the contest, the Rapids came close to taking the lead twice inside the first fifteen minutes. Forward Kevin Doyle had the first chance at the 10th minute but his shot from the corner of the box went sailing high.
Three minutes later, Dominique Badji would be denied by Dallas keeper Jesse Gonzalez with a solid hand save at the near post.
Momentum slowly switched to Dallas’ favor, but the Rapids would stand firm defensively, in large part due to Tim Howard’s numerous saves. Midfielders Michael Barrios and Kellyn Acosta tested Colorado’s backline, but the visitors would keep the Texas club at bay.
Moments before the interval, the Rapids would catch a break as referee Alan Kelly cancelled out Maxi Urruti’s goal with the assistance of Video Review and VAR Dave Gantar. In the second minute of stoppage time, Dallas would be denied the lead after replays showed defender Matt Hedges fouling Badji in the play leading up to the goal.
In the second half, Dallas kept pressing and creating chances, forcing a handful of fine saves from Howard. Defender Kortne Ford, who had replaced Axel Sjöberg at halftime, would also come up big in the 61st minute, deflecting a shot from Tesho Akindele that had beaten the USMNT keeper.
With eight minutes left to play in regulation, both sides would have to head back in to the locker rooms for an hour-and-a-half minute delay due to severe weather in the area.
The squads returned to the pitch and Dallas had a pair of solid looks good in the final minutes but none that would make their way past Howard.
The Rapids (6-12-4; 22 points) return home to take on D.C. United on Saturday, August 19 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. MT (Altitude).
