On Monday morning, Chris Armas arrived to a chilly DICK'S Sporting Goods Park under the impression he would just be taking a few pictures and recording sound bites ahead of the 2025 season. Little did he know, he'd be getting the surprise of a lifetime.
Earlier this year, Armas was nominated to the National Soccer Hall of Fame Class of 2025 for his accomplishments as a player, both in MLS and with the national team. On Monday, it would be Rapids legend and fellow Hall of Famer Marcelo Balboa that broke the news he'd been selected to the federation's highest position of stature.
Armas' family, including his wife, Justine, and eldest son, Chris, brothers Jason and Phil and mother Crysel all poured out of the locker room to surprise him on the special day. His brothers and mother had all flown in from New York during the busy holiday season for the occasion.
President Pádraig Smith, Chief Business Officer Wayne Brant and assistant coaches Chris Sharpe, Chris Little and Ian Sarachan were also in on the bombshell announcement, ready to offer their congratulations to a coach that has already made such an impact on the club in just a year since being appointed.

The surprise was followed by a luncheon for all friends and family to celebrate the memorable day for Chris and his family.
"Seeing Marcelo Balboa on a screen sharing this information, looking at my family come out of the building--my brothers, my mother, my wife--incredible," he said. "I was completeley blown away and caught off-guard here. I'm very grateful that many people went out of their way to make this happen."
