Colorado Rapids have a chance of reaching the final of the Desert Diamond Cup when they complete the qualifying rounds against hosts FC Tucson on Wednesday evening, kickoff 5.30 p.m. MT (LIVE).
Pablo Mastroeni’s side have enjoyed fluctuating fortunes so far in both games of the MLS preseason tournament. They led against Sporting KC and New England Revolution before being held to draws. Some of their football was encouraging, especially in the first game, however they failed to hold to a much-needed victory.
That may change against the Premier Development League side and, if they take all three points they could reach Saturday’s main final against Real Salt Lake, their Rocky Mountain Cup rivals.
The Utah team have won both games so far and lead the table on six points. If they avoid defeat to Sporting KC and the Revolution do likewise against Seattle Sounders then the Rapids will have a late date on Saturday night.
The only piece of team news involves Shane O’Neill, who has been sent home from camp suffering from flu-like symptoms and will not feature against Tucson.
The Opponents
FC Tucson are hosting their fourth Desert Diamond Cup and they have found it tough going this time. They were beaten 6-0 in round one by Seattle and 3-1 by RSL last time out.
The Arizona team had a good 2014. They finished first in the Mountain Division of the PDL and reached the Conference finals in the play-offs.
Former FC Tucson players include Donny Toia, who featured for Real Salt Lake and Chivas USA, and Aaron Long, who was with Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers.
