COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — A trip to the Quarterfinals of the 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League is at stake as the Colorado Rapids host Comunicaciones FC on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park (6:15 p.m. MT; FS2, TUDN).
Colorado enters Wednesday’s match looking to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg of their Round of 16 encounter against Comunicaciones in Guatemala last week. With few chances for either side, the match was a close affair until Karel Espino’s deflected effort from distance in the 89th minute gave the home side the advantage heading into the second leg. The match also saw midfielders Bryan Acosta and Max Alves make their competitive debuts for the Rapids since joining the club in the offseason, both coming on as second-half substitutes.
The result in Guatemala means the Rapids must win by multiple goals on Wednesday to advance to the Quarterfinals; a 1-0 win would take the game directly into penalty kicks, while any goals scored by the visitors would require the Rapids to win by a margin of two or more goals due to the away goals rule.
