Emme Green, a 13-year-old Denver native, recently won the Rapids Support Local scarf design contest launched this spring to give local fans the opportunity to showcase their Colorado community. On Saturday, scarves featuring Emme's winning design will be available to purchase as our "Merch of the Match" item, as the Rapids take on LA Galaxy at home. How long have you been living in Colorado and been a fan of the Rapids to find the inspiration for a Support Local scarf design?
I have been living in Colorado for all my life. I think since I was around three or four years old I’ve been in the Rapids [youth soccer] program and been going to Rapids games so I’ve been a fan for a long time.
Do you have a favorite player on the team?
Michael Barrios and Jack Price.
What’s your favorite memory from a Rapids game?
Well, I mean, I guess overall every Rapids game we always like we play on the fields beforehand and after the games, and I love doing that, it's so fun to play with my friends like at the game.
How did you find out about the scarf design contest?
My dad sent me the link and all the contest information, so then a group of friends and I, we all decided we were gonna do it and draw them together and show each other. So that's basically how I found out about it.
Where did you get the inspiration for your winning design?
From the beginning, I knew I wanted to do something with the mountains. At first I had a few ideas with how the roof of the stadium is in the shape of mountains and I was going to do that but then I decided to go with a topography map because I thought that was just a cool idea. And it's on the third kit design, so I thought that'd be a great idea.
Being born and raised in Colorado, do you and your family get outdoors a lot and embrace that lifestyle that inspired the design?
Yeah, we go on hikes and we go to lakes all the time with our friends and are always getting out. My favorite trip was a road trip around Utah and Arizona and on the way we did mountain biking and that was really awesome.
What was your reaction when you found out you won the contest?
Originally, I didn't know that mine was a finalist for a couple of days. But then my friends that also entered found out and then told me so that was pretty cool. They were all really supportive about it. They’re all coming to the game. It’s kind of crazy and I think it’s really cool.
