COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – The Colorado Rapids acquired allocation money in a trade with Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Friday, sending the club’s natural 2nd round MLS SuperDraft pick in 2014 and an International roster spot for the next three seasons in return.

“Getting this allocation money will give us some flexibility in terms of the salary cap and acquisitions, both this season and into the future,” said Colorado Rapids Technical Director Paul Bravo.

Allocation money can be used by MLS teams to sign players and fit current player salaries under the league’s salary cap. After trading an international spot, the Rapids are left with a total of six international spots on the roster for the 2012 season, of which three are currently occupied (Caleb Folan, Josh Janniere, Jamie Smith).

The Rapids will hold their first preseason training session on Monday, January 23 at 10:00 a.m. at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The 2012 MLS season opens on Saturday, March 10 when the Rapids host the Columbus Crew
