Rapids fall to St. Louis CITY SC, exit U.S. Open Cup

The Colorado Rapids saw their 2026 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup campaign end in the Semifinals after falling to St. Louis CITY SC on Wednesday night at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park.  

Early in the match, Colorado maintained a majority of the positive momentum in the attacking third. The club created chances early in the first half, but were unable to strike first. 

The visitors managed to record the first goal of the match after Jeong Sang-Bin capitalized on an opportunity in the 32nd minute to give his side the lead. 

From there, Colorado looked to bounce back, but would head into halftime down a goal. 

St. Louis came out of the break with positive momentum and created chances as they attempted to add to their lead. 

The road side were successful in their attempts, doubling their lead in the 52nd minute off the foot of Simon Becher. 

Shortly thereafter, St. Louis added a third from Alexandru Mǎțan in the 59th minute. 

That would be all the scoring for the match, with St. Louis advancing to the Final and Colorado seeing their longest U.S. Open Cup run since 2004 end in the Semifinals. 

The Rapids will quickly shift their focus back to MLS play this weekend, with the club hosting Seattle Sounders FC at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park on Saturday, September 19. Kickoff for the match available is set for 7:30 p.m. MT.
