COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — The Colorado Rapids (5-5-3, 18 pts) will host Nashville SC (5-4-4, 19 pts) at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park on Saturday, May 28, in the first-ever match between the two clubs (7 p.m. MT; Altitude Sports, Altitude Sports Radio 92.5 FM).
Saturday’s match will be the first time Nashville and the Rapids cross paths in MLS since the Tennessean club joined the league as an expansion team in 2020. Long-time Rapids fans will see the return of a few familiar faces in Nashville SC’s head coach Gary Smith, assistant coach Steve Guppy, assistant coach Kosuke Kimura, goalkeeper coach Matt Pickens and defender Eric Miller. Smith, Guppy, Kimura and Pickens were all members of the Rapids side that won the 2010 MLS Cup; Pickens currently holds the all-time records for most appearances made by a Rapids goalkeeper (116), most wins by a Rapids goalkeeper (41) and the most clean sheets by a Rapids goalkeeper (29). Miller spent three seasons with the Rapids between 2016-18, making 56 appearances (53 starts) and recording an assist during his time in Colorado.
Robin Fraser’s side are currently unbeaten in 23 straight regular-season home matches, a club record that is also tied for the fourth-longest run in MLS history. A result on Saturday would equal the third-longest home unbeaten run in league history (24).
Rapids goalkeeper William Yarbrough recorded his sixth clean sheet of the year during the club’s last home match on May 22, tying him for second-most in MLS. The two-time Liga MX champion is one shutout away from surpassing Tim Howard for fourth-most clean sheets in club history (23). Forward Diego Rubio leads the Rapids with six goals in 2022, which is T-3rd in MLS, and has scored two goals in his last three appearances at home.
Nashville SC is undefeated at home in 2022, but has lost its previous two road matches and been outscored 3-0. Forward C.J. Sapong and midfielder Hany Mukhtar lead Nashville with four goals each, while Mukhtar also leads the club with five assists. University of Denver alumnus goalkeeper Joe Willis has three clean sheets to his name in 2022.
Saturday’s match will also see the debut of the Rapids’ 2022 adidas Primeblue kits, which are made from a high-performance recycled material and Parley Ocean Plastic™.
