It’s a well-known story to those that follow the Rapids; Kortne Ford’s mother Laurie was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer earlier this year. What you may not know, is that since the diagnosis was shared, the entire Rapids community, and beyond, have rallied together to #Stand4theFords.
Some have contributed by holding encouraging posters or standing in the 24th minute of matches on May 5 and May 13. For others it has been by providing monetary support by making a deposit to Laurie’s GoFundMe page.
Earlier this month, Ford's teammates came together to put their own twist on their contribution.
After hearing the news of Laurie Ford’s Stage 4 cancer diagnosis Rapids midfielder, Micheal Azira and his wife felt called to take action. They began brainstorming ideas of ways to raise money to help alleviate some healthcare costs.
“You can't do life alone. It's good to help out others, because you never know when it could be you next,” Azira added. “He (Ford) being a part of our team means he is family, and no matter what, we try to help each other out.”
After coming up with a solution to set up an online jersey auction, Azira enlisted the help of his teammates and preparations began. The auction was live for seven days and featured match-worn autographed jerseys from each player on the Rapids roster.
“This idea reflects the commitment the guys have to one another. I think it’s a fantastic gesture to do something for a teammate that is in a tough place at the moment,” Pablo Mastroeni said. “I couldn’t be prouder of the guys.”
On Tuesday, July 18 following training, the Colorado Rapids grouped together to present a deeply moved Ford with the auction proceeds, a ten-thousand-dollar check for Laurie Ford and her fight against cancer.
“Life is all about praying for those in need and helping them in any way we can. We are called to serve others,” Azira said. “The team coming out to help Kortne and his mom is an honor. That's what teammates do for each other.”
