COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Sunday, October 2, 2011) – The Colorado Rapids Reserves earned a 5-1 victory over the FC Dallas Reserves on Sunday morning at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, bringing to a close a big week for the Rapids. Forward Quincy Amarikwa scored three goals in a seven minute span in the first half, and Ross LaBauex and Andre Akpan also scored for the Rapids Reserves.
The Rapids almost took a 1-0 lead just seconds into the match, when Akpan’s shot was tipped wide by Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz. Dallas had a chance on a breakaway three minutes in, but Colorado goalkeeper Ian Joyce saved low on Bryan Leyva. The rest of the first half was all Rapids, starting in the seventh minute when Danny Earls had his shot saved by Seitz, but LaBauex cleaned up the rebound to give Colorado the lead.
Amarikwa began his impressive scoring spree in the 32nd minute, taking a pass from LaBauex inside the box and finishing to the far post. Five minutes later he played a give-and-go with Akpan before rounding Seitz and slotting into the empty net for his second, and in the 39th minute, a Joseph Nane shot hit Amarikwa in the back before deflecting into the goal.
The second half was much calmer until almost the end of the match, when a Rapids defensive miscue allowed Leyva in on a breakaway, shooting hard past Joyce to pull the game to 4-1. However, the Rapids reestablished the four-goal lead with one minute left in the match when Eddie Ababio charged down the wing before crossing to a sliding Akpan, whose shot found the net to complete the scoring at 5-1.
The Rapids Reserves move to 3-5-1 (W-L-T) on the season, but have won each of their last three matches, outscoring opponents 10-1 in those games. The team has one match remaining, coming at home on October 15 against Real Salt Lake. FC Dallas falls to 4-4-0 in Reserve Team action.
The Colorado Rapids play their next game on Friday, October 14 at 8:30 p.m., facing rival Real Salt Lake at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in the Rocky Mountain Cup deciding match.
