Commerce City, Colo. - The Colorado Rapids selected midfielder Tony Cascio with the 14th overall pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, held today in Kansas City. Cascio, a versatille midfielder from Gilbert, Arizona, enjoyed a distinguished four-year career at the University of Connecticut, scoring 24 goals and adding 25 assists in 85 matches.
"I'm very happy to get Tony with our pick," said Rapids head coach Oscar Pareja. "We thoughts he was going to go higher than this, so we were very excited when he fell into our hands. He's a disciplined, intense, and versatille player who caught my eye the first time I saw him play. I'm looking forward to bringing him to the group."
A standout midfielder/forward at UConn, Cascio was a 2010 NSCAA First Team All-American, the 2010 Big East Offensive Player of the Year, amd a two-time All-Big East First Team selection (2009, 2010). Cascio attended Hamilton High School outside of Phoenix, Ariz., where he led his team in goals during his junior and senior seasons.
Cascio will report to Colorado late next week for preseason, with a full schedule of Rapids events to be announced shortly. The Rapids open the 2012 season on March 10 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, facing off against the Columbus Crew.
