The Colorado Rapids (0-0-1, 1 pt.) open their 2025 MLS campaign with a 0-0 draw against St. Louis CITY SC (0-0-1, 1 pt.) at Energizer Park on Saturday night. Zack Steffen shined in net for the Rapids to earn his and the clubā€™s first clean sheet of the season.

Despite already playing a competitive match this week, the energy for the Rapidsā€™ MLS regular season opener was still high, with a blank slate and endless opportunity. The conditions were familiar for the Rapids, with it being chilly night in St. Louis following an even colder night in Colorado this past Tuesday against LAFC.

The match kicked off with both sides playing back to feel out the pace of the match. St. Louis earned the first high-quality chance following a long throw-in and a deflection right in front of net. The home side managed to get a foot on the loose ball, but Steffen was there with quick reflexes to stop the close-range shot.

Colorado would eventually create chances of their own, with Rapids debutant Josh Atencio being at the center of multiple passing plays in the attacking third. Opportunities from Cole Bassett and Rafael Navarro were there for the club, but they were unable to convert to log the matchā€™s first goal.

With strong defensive play on both ends, the first half concluded with no goals as the two sides remained level.

It was more of the same for both clubs in the second half, with the emphasis being on strong defensive play. The backline for Colorado, which was the same as the one that opened the 2025 campaign for Colorado against LAFC on Tuesday, stood strong to limit any opportunities for their opposition. Any chance that managed to get through was taken care of by Steffen, who posted five saves in the contest.

The clean sheet for Steffen was his seventh as a member of the Rapids in MLS play and the 30th of his MLS career.

Colorado will shift their focus for a quick turnaround against LAFC in the second leg of Concacaf Champions Cup Round One. Heading into the match with a 2-1 lead based on aggregate scoring, a win would send the Rapids into the second round. Coverage for the match will be available on FOX Sports, ColoradoRapids.com, and the Colorado Rapids app.
