Reserves: Mwanga goal lifts Rapids past Portland

Rapids Reserves win 1-0 over Portland Timbers Reserves

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Sunday, March 31, 2013) – The Colorado Rapids defeated the Portland Timbers 1-0 in Reserve League action today at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park Field 20, powered by a goal from Colorado forward Danny Mwanga.

Both the Timbers and the Rapids had several chances on goal in the first half, but it wasn’t until the second half that either team found the back of the net. In the 50th minute, Atiba Harris flicked a ball to Davy Armstrong running down the right sideline who served it into the box to be headed in by Mwanga. In the 88th, the Timbers had a chance to equalize with a powerful shot from Jose Valencia, but goalkeeper Stew Ceus made the save and preserved the 1-0 Rapids victory.

Both teams are now 1-1-0 in the West Division of the MLS Reserve League. The Rapids next take on Real Salt Lake Reserves at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 6 – right after the Subaru Rocky Mountain Cup matchup set for 4 p.m. that day. The Timbers’ next match is Sunday, April 7 against VSI Tampa Bay FC of the USL Pro league at JELD-WEN Field.
