Notes:
150 MLS STARTS FOR KELLYN ACOSTA
Midfielder Kellyn Acosta hits a major milestone tonight, as he makes his 150th career start in MLS. The past 59 starts have come since joining the Rapids via trade with FC Dallas in 2018. Throughout his career, as of tonight, Acosta will have played in 179 total matches since joining the league through a Homegrown contract signing with Dallas in 2012.
VINES AND ABUBAKAR RETURN FROM INJURY
After missing the first two regular season games due to injury, Sam Vines and Lalas Abubakar rejoin the 18-man roster for tonight's game. Vines starts in his usual position as left-back, which allows Acosta to move back to the central midfield position. Abubakar will not be starting tonight, but he will be available for selection.
FIRE AWAY
Through two games, Michael Barrios is fifth in MLS with a shooting accuracy of 80 percent and is tied for sixth in MLS with four shots on target. The Colombian leads Colorado with eight shots this season. The Rapids acquired Barrios in January via trade from FC Dallas. Barrios is one of five players in MLS to register at least 30 goals and 40 assists since 2015 (Diego Valeri, Nicolás Lodeiro, Sebastian Giovinco, Federico HiguaÃn).
LOVE WHAT YOU’VE DONE WITH THE PLACE
This is the first meeting between these two sides since June 2019, when Colorado picked up a 2-2 draw at BC Place in Vancouver. Former Whitecaps FC midfielder Nicolás Mezquida picked up 2 assists in his return to British Columbia, first to Diego Rubio and then Andre Shinyashiki. In Colorado’s last visit to Rio Tinto Stadium—where Whitecaps FC is currently based due to travel restrictions between the U.S. and Canada—the Rapids set a club record for largest margin of victory with a 5-0 thrashing of Real Salt Lake to capture the Rocky Mountain Cup in September 2020.
ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER SET PIECE GOAL
When Andre Shinyashiki scored on Jack Price’s corner delivery last Saturday, it marked Colorado’s 7th goal from a corner kick since the beginning of 2020. Last season, Colorado was tied for the highest conversion rate on corner kicks (six goals on 90 attempts). In 2019, Colorado led MLS with 15 goals off of corners, nearly double the next highest total, and 79 chances created from set plays.
