In their final home match of the 2018 season, the Rapids Special Olympics Unified Team defeated Real Salt Lake Unified in a 3-1 victory Saturday at DICK'S Sporting Goods Park.
The first half was a defensive battle between, but it was Samir Mohamed who gave the Rapids an early lead in the 14th minute after a beautiful cross from Nate Wade.
After a five-minute halftime, the teams took the field again for what shaped up to be an electric second half. Real Salt Lake Unified leveled the score in the 22nd minute with a goal from Aiden Roach.
As the game was winding down, the Rapids were able to score two more goals. The first, which proved to be the game winner, was scored by Grant Ho while Mohamed added his second to give the Rapids the insurance they needed to secure a comfortable win. The match ended with a 3-1 victory for the Rapids as they closed out their 2018 season.
Following the match, Rapids Executive Vice President and General Manager Padraig Smith, Rapids Senior Vice President of Business Operations Wayne Brant were both on hand to greet each athlete with a handshake and medal at midfield. Rapids Goalkeeper Zac MacMath, and defenders Jack Price and Tommy Smith were also present to cheer on both teams.
This was the final match of the Rapids Special Olympics Unified season. Tryouts for the 2019 season will be announced in February.
