We've been following this story since the day the U.S. qualified for the final phase of World Cup Qualifying, and it appears we might have an answer this week.
Denver, Salt Lake City, and Kansas City are the three finalists to host the U.S. Men's National Team's first 2014 World Cup home qualifier in CONCACAF's Hexagonal stage, this according to veteran soccer journalist Grant Wahl.

Appearing on Fox Soccer's "Goals on Sunday" show, Sports Illustrated's Wahl said that U.S. Soccer this week will announce the home venue for the March 22 match against Costa Rica.
"A high-ranking US Soccer [Federation] source is telling me that the three finalists are Salt Lake City, Denver and Kansas City," Wahl said (video above). "The first two are obviously at altitude which would be helpful for preparation for atltitude against Mexico a few days later in Mexico City [on March 26]."
He later tweeted the same information:
This news comes a few weeks after U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati told Wahl that Denver was a candidate, along with many other locations.
The U.S. team is currently in camp preparing for a friendly on Jan. 29 against Canada and then will open the final round of WCQ on Feb. 6 at Honduras before hosting Costa Rica on March 22.
