COMMERCE CITY, Colo.- Colorado Rapids 2 is set to face Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC of USL League One in the Second Round of the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m. MT at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park. Fans can tune in to watch Wednesday’s match on mlssoccer.com.
Rapids 2 has advanced to the Second Round after defeating Colorado Premier League’s Azteca FC in the First Round of the tournament. The 3-0 result at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park was highlighted by goals from Joshua Belluz, Daniel Garcia and Alec Díaz.
Belluz marked his first professional appearance with the first goal in his career. Both Belluz’s and Garcia’s goals were scored off of corner kick deliveries from defender Sebastian Anderson. The third and final goal of the night, Díaz’s first goal of the year for Rapids 2, was scored in the run of play off an assist from First Team midfielder Wayne Frederick.
On the defensive end of the pitch, Homegrown goalkeeper Adam Beaudry recorded his first clean sheet of the year.
Hailstorm FC punched their ticket to the Second Round after defeating the reigning NPSL champions, Tulsa Athletic, in a 4-1 result. Hailstorm’s goal scorers included Lucky Opara, Irvin Parra, Mark Hernández and Ethan Hoard.
During the 2023 U.S. Open Cup, the Colorado Rapids First Team faced off against Northern Colorado in the Third Round of the tournament and advanced to the Round of 32 with a 3-1 victory. Rapids 2 midfielder Marlon Vargas made his first-ever appearance with the Rapids First, recording a start and playing 61 minutes of the match.
