Earlier this month Kortne Ford posted a heartfelt update to his social media regarding his mother's fight against cancer. In order to help the Fords, all proceeds from Saturday's one-of-a-kind game poster will be put towards Laurie's healthcare costs. Lunazul will match the first $1,500 raised.
It's a well-known story to those that follow the Rapids; Laurie Ford, is suffering from a form of bone cancer that doctors have deemed terminal. The Fords have been open about the diagnosis since publishing a GoFundMe page in April 2017.
Since then, the entire Rapids community, and beyond have rallied to #SupportTheFords. You may recall that on May 5 and May 13 a group of Rapids fans leant support to the Ford's by encouraging those in attendance to stand in the 24th minute. Kortne's teammates also got involved by auctioning off their game-worn jerseys to raise $10,000 for the cause.
Thanks to the financial support and encouragement in 2017, doctors saw Laurie's cancer marker numbers decrease. Unfortunately, in recent months those numbers have begun to climb.
According to Ford's GoFundMe page:
"In recent months, however, those numbers have begun to climb again. This indicates that new and more extensive treatments are necessary. With that, comes a new round of out of pocket medical expenses in 2018.
Among those medical expenses is a test that would determine the exact type of chemo that would specifically target her type of cancer cells. This test comes at a cost of $10,000 that is not covered by insurance.
In addition, Laurie makes a three hour round trip drive for treatments 5 days a week. These, too, are not covered by insurance. She does this while continuing to hold down her full-time teaching job."
Laurie's fight is not over. To help raise contributions, fans can purchase a $10 limited-edition poster from Section 129 at the 2018 Home Opener Saturday, March 24.
