The Colorado Rapids announced today that the club has transferred midfielder Nicolás Mezquida to Volos FC in the Greek Super League.
“Nico is someone who has meant a lot to us since he joined the club in 2018,” said Pádraig Smith, Colorado Rapids Executive VP & General Manager. “He was a key part of the team’s transformation over the past few years, both on and off the pitch, as he brought a contagious, uplifting attitude and impeccable work ethic to our locker room. When the opportunity to play overseas presented itself to him, we were happy to help Nico achieve his dream of playing in Europe.”
Mezquida, 30, appeared in 84 matches with Colorado across all competitions, registering eight goals and nine assists across 2,802 minutes since making his Rapids debut on March 2, 2019. Prior to his arrival in Colorado, the Uruguayan midfielder spent five seasons in the league with Vancouver Whitecaps FC, making 122 appearances across all competitions and recording 13 goals and seven assists with the Canadian side.
Founded in 2017 in Greece’s Gamma Ethniki (Third Division), Volos FC earned promotion to the Football League (Second League) after winning the Gamme Ethniki in 2018. The club then won the second division title the following year to earn promotion to the Super League in 2019.
