The Rapids hold the Nos. 3, 12, 41, 70 picks in this year’s edition of the MLS SuperDraft presented by adidas after acquiring the third overall pick in a midseason trade with Toronto FC for Mark-Anthony Kaye. Coverage of the SuperDraft begins at 2:30 PM MT on December 21.
Rookie Moves
The Rapids’ eye for young talent was heavily showcased in 2013 and 2019 when their first-round draft picks of Dillon Powers and Andre Shinyashiki went on to earn the MLS Rookie of the Year Award after explosive first seasons with the club. Anthony Markanich, the Rapids’ No. 26 pick in 2021, went on to log impressive minutes with both the Rapids’ first and second teams following his MLS debut with the Burgundy Boys in their regular season 1-0 win over Seattle.
Now dubbed as the Young Player of the Year Award, the Rapids’ chances at selecting, cultivating and crowning another skilled young talent is multiplied by four with their acquired picks.
That No. 3 Spot
After acquiring the third first-round pick in a trade with Toronto in July, the Rapids will be able to add a third No. 3 pick to their roster for 2023. Burgundy Boys Keegan Rosenberry and Jonathan Lewis were both drafted at the number 3 spot in their respective SuperDrafts before finding their way to Colorado. Rosenberry and Lewis have combined for a total of 28 goals and 18 assists in their time in Burgundy.
Other notable No. 3 picks in MLS history include Omar Gonzalez, Perry Kitchen, and Kelyn Rowe, all who went on to represent their club and country at the highest standard.
Other notable SuperDraft picks found on Colorado’s roster include Lalas Abubakar (No. 5 by Columbus in 2017), Collen Warner (No. 15 by Real Salt Lake in 2010), Steven Beitashour (No. 30 by San Jose in 2010) and Anthony Markanich (No. 26 by Colorado in 2021). The Rapids’ potential for talent picked in this year’s SuperDraft is exponential.
