Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Tim Howard announced today that he will be retiring at the conclusion of the 2019 season via his Twitter account. The 39-year-old's historic 21-year career has seen him play for the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, Manchester United, Everton and the Colorado Rapids.
Since joining the Rapids in July 2016, Howard has made 257 saves over the course of 75 appearances in regular-season play, good for fourth-most in club history.
Internationally, the 'Secretary of Defense' has the most wins (62) and appearances (121) among USMNT goalkeepers, and also sits in second place in shutouts (42). He has represented the US on the world's biggest stage after being a part of the 2006, 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup teams. Howard is a two-time CONCACAF Gold Cup winner, a three-time CONCACAF Goalkeeper of the Year, and he took home the FIFA Confederations Cup Golden Glove Award in 2009.
