COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - Colorado Rapids 2 have signed Rapids Academy graduate and midfielder Robinson Aguirre to a professional contract for the 2023 MLS NEXT Pro season, the club announced today. With this signing, Aguirre becomes the first-ever Rapids Academy graduate to sign a professional contract with Rapids 2 straight out of his time with the Academy.
“Robinson’s achievements over the last 18 months, both at the club and international level, have made it possible for him to continue in the program on a professional contract,” said Brian Crookham, Rapids 2 General Manager. “We are very excited to be able to offer him this opportunity and feel that he will lead the way for more players utilizing this step on their way to realizing their dream of becoming an MLS player.”
Aguirre, 18, joined the Rapids organization in 2020 as an academy player. On March 27, 2022, Aguirre made his professional debut for Rapids 2 in the team’s first-ever MLS NEXT Pro match. The young midfielder became a mainstay of the team during its inaugural season, scoring one goal and adding one assist in 15 appearances, all starts. His strong performances in midfield earned Aguirre two call ups to El Salvador’s senior national team and one call up to La Selecta’s U-20 side in 2022. He made his debut with the senior national team on April 24, 2022, playing 45 minutes in the team’s international friendly versus Guatemala. Aguirre went on to log his first start under Hugo Perez on May 1, 2022, in a friendly versus Honduras.
